-
- That's why they're giving it away, obviously. On the PC, you get a
- word processor, MS-Word or something similar, "for free" with nearly
- every purchase these days. That makes selling any other wordprocessor
- something of a problem. And that's why most of the alternatives have
- either disappeared or gone the discount route, like the $70 DeScribe
- CD-ROM (for Windows and OS/2) I saw advertized the other day.
-
- The logic is clear -- if it's a give away, folks will try it. If they
- like it, they'll use it instead of Word, and they'll pay for the
- upgrades. If they charge much of anything for it, they'll have a
- problem getting the user to use it in the first place. Much the same
- situation as Web browsers; when some are free, it's hard to charge for
- any of them, at least until you have the user hooked.
-
- And let me tell you, there's room for something other than Word on the
- PC. Word may do everything under the kitchen sink, but it's painful to
- use, full of bugs, and slow.
-
- Also, assuming that FW5 sports a compatible file format on the PC,
- they're tapping another market here -- Amiga people who have to use
- PCs sometimes (like at school, work, etc). I was just telling someone
- the other day about FW4, and how I wish there was something as
- reliable and efficient on the PC.

-
- From the sound of things, it sounds like its reason for existance is
- that some folks came to Softwood and offered to do a free port of FW
- to Windows 95. I can't say I would turn away that kind of offer
- myself, even if it's a move I wouldn't have put my own time and
- efforts into.
